The Schwarzatal Valley

As one of the oldest nature reserves in Thuringia, the 53 km long Schwarzatal Valley is one of the most popular hiking destinations in the Thuringian Forest. Excellently signposted hiking trails, romantic landscapes and unique nature promise an unforgettable outdoor experience. The varied geography provides visitors with impressive views time and again and awaits them with many well-developed hiking trails and rest areas.

From Bad Blankenburg, the “Gateway to the Schwarzatal Valley,” this destination can be explored perfectly, on foot or by bike. Special excursion destinations include the Thuringian Mountain Railway and the Princely Adventure Worlds of Schwarzburg Castle. E-bikes are available in our rental service.

Bad Blankenburg

Bad Blankenburg is a charming destination that has a lot to offer, especially for nature and history lovers. The small spa town is known as the cradle of German Fröbel pedagogy and, with the Friedrich Fröbel Museum, offers exciting insights into the development of the kindergarten. Fröbel’s concept is widespread internationally and offers preschool children support instead of pure care. Even in the American region, the proper name “Kindergarden” is used.

Bad Blankenburg is also ideal for hikes and walks along the idyllic Schwarza River, through the surrounding forests, and to the colorful orchid and lavender blossoms in spring and summer.

A tour on the Friedrich Fröbel hiking trail, which leads from Bad Blankenburg to Keilhau – once Fröbel’s daily route – is particularly worthwhile. Along the way, the Fröbelblick (Fröbel view) with its magnificent view of the Rinnetal valley and the Thuringian Mountains, as well as the striking Fröbel Tower, invite you to take a break with an impressive panorama.

Greifenstein Castle with Falconry

A highlight is Greifenstein Castle, located high above the town of Bad Blankenburg, which is considered one of the largest castle ruins in Thuringia and offers impressive views over the Saale and Rinne valleys.

Experience majestic birds of prey up close. – Here the art of falconry comes to life. In a breathtaking setting, eagles, falcons and owls show their impressive flight behavior – sometimes gracefully gliding, sometimes with rapid precision.

The flight show combines interesting facts with spectacular moments: the animals fly over your heads and present their hunting techniques. An experience for all age groups – educational, entertaining and unforgettable.

Rudolstadt

Rudolstadt, idyllically situated in the Saale valley, impresses with its rich culture and history. Particularly noteworthy is the imposing Heidecksburg, which sits majestically above the city. The baroque palace complex not only offers spectacular views over the city and the valley, but also fascinating insights into the past. Visitors can admire magnificent halls, artistic exhibitions and a miniature museum project.

Another highlight is the Theater Schiller Rudolstadt, which has recently been extensively renovated and modernized. With its varied program of plays, musical theater and concerts, it is one of the cultural highlights of the region.
In addition to the castle and theater, Rudolstadt attracts visitors with its charming streets, historic half-timbered houses such as the Thuringian Farmhouses, and the banks of the Saale, which invite you to take a walk.

The Thuringian Sea

The “Thuringian Sea” is Germany’s largest reservoir region with a variety of opportunities for activities and excursions: water sports, boat trips, kayaking, diving, fishing, water skiing, surfing, sailing, stand-up paddling, and even paragliding. At the same time, the idyllic area is a paradise for hiking trips, with breathtaking tours and viewpoints. Embedded in the picturesque lake landscape, you will also find restaurants, villages and castles as excursion destinations.

Saalfeld

Saalfeld, one of the oldest cities in Thuringia, uniquely combines history, culture, and nature. The picturesque old town invites you to explore with its half-timbered houses, the 4 city gates, and the imposing castle backdrop. A highlight are the famous Saalfeld Fairy Grottoes, a fascinating stalactite paradise that is considered the “most colorful show cave in the world.” Guests of the Morgenroth receive a 10% discount on admission (ask for a voucher at the reception).
